Tourists coming to Morocco often have a lot of questions around what to wear, particularly if it’s their first time in a Muslim-majority country. Moroccans in general are known for being very tolerant and open-minded towards foreign visitors. Moroccans themselves dress in a wide variety of ways and do not expect visitors to dress as they do. It’s not uncommon to see women in shorts in major cities like Casablanca and Rabat, however in more rural areas this isn’t the case. When visiting Morocco, it is a good idea to dress more modestly than you may at home. In general, the less you wear the more attention you will attract, especially for women.

Dressing comfortably while respecting the local customs and traditions in Morocco is easy. Dressing in a way that respects local customs also allows you to get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. Opt for loose-fitting and breathable clothing made from lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen.

Maxi dresses, flowy pants, and long skirts are great options for women, while men can choose lightweight trousers and shirts. In the main cities you can get away with wearing pants or a skirt that reaches below the knee, and a short-sleeved t-shirt. Layering is key to adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day, so consider bringing a lightweight cardigan or scarf.

Good quality, comfortable footwear is essential for travel in Morocco, even if you don’t plan to do any hiking. Paths can be uneven, dusty and covered in debris, so worn-in walking shoes with good grip are recommended.

If you are heading into mountains, it can get quite cool in the evenings (even in spring and autumn), so packing a light fleece or jacket is a good idea.
